I far prefer Thunderbird for email, however I also do use the pro version of Mailwasher (also HIGHLY recommended, even the free version) to filter spam and messages that I don't want to receive without having to actually download the messages, very handy.
I am hoping that the Lightning calendar application for Thunderbird will be made compatible with the new version of Thunderbird, I expect it won't take long for an update to be released.
